Using Martinis as a metaphor, we take an intimate look into the lives of extraordinary people.
Name: Katie Clapp
Profession: President & Co-Founder, FRAXA Research Foundation
What stirs your passion?
The vision of finding effective treatments for Fragile X syndrome and what that might mean for my son, Andy. He is turning 30 on June 8, 2019. Because of Fragile X, he functions like a young child now, but I imagine talking with him, teaching him, watching him learn and grow and experience all there is to life.
What has shaken your faith?
That there are some people – thankfully not many – who although they share a common mission – sometimes choose to spend their talents and energy trying to take each other down, rather than move closer to the goal.
Who (dead or alive) would you like to have a martini with?
I would love to sit down with Albert Einstein for too many martinis. My father was a theoretical physicist, and as a child, I never could understand his theory of sub-atomic particles. My dad pitched his theory to Einstein in a 40+ page letter, and to my astonishment, he received a reply. Dr. Einstein’s key point, graciously written: if you can’t explain your idea in a half a page, revisit your idea. I have so many questions to ask Einstein… What do you think is the best approach to curing Fragile X? Who would you invest in? Who does your hair?
What’s your poison? (The trait you most deplore in yourself?)
Impatience. I do try to hide this, but unfortunately occasionally it does show in an eye roll or two, if someone is especially long-winded.
What do you see as the ultimate buzzkill?
I worry that I won’t do my part to get the job done in the time I have left and will leave Andy – and others who have Fragile X – without the full lives they ought to have.
How do you want to be remembered when the glasses are raised?
As someone who was part of solving the mystery of Fragile X syndrome and finding a cure.
What’s your happy place?
Seeing Andy smile. Or on a horse, because I’ve found that horses are as sensitive and responsive as Andy is, and they make sure you stay in the moment. Or better yet, riding off on horses with Andy!
What is your signature drink? (We’d love to know what you like to drink, but what we REALLY want to know is what is your favorite expression or motto?)
They can because they think they can – Virgil
